Water in Erie is Hard
According to our proprietary data, the average total water hardness in Erie is 8.5 grains per gallon (gpg), which falls in the hard range. This means there’s a lot of calcium and magnesium in the water here — two minerals that can build up over time and leave behind residue in your pipes, appliances, and fixtures. This buildup can make things less efficient and even shorten the life of your home’s systems if left unchecked.

Erie, PA water sources
Erie Water Works has secured an additional $10 million in funding from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority to continue their lead pipe replacement project, bringing the total project value to $65 million. The funding includes a $9.6 million grant and a $400,000 low-interest loan, which will help the utility replace nearly 7,400 lead service lines throughout the city’s water system. More than 3,000 lead connections have already been replaced since the project began in 2004, with Erie Water Works aiming to complete 85% of the work by 2025 and finish the entire project by 2027.
The lead pipe replacement project addresses critical water quality concerns for Erie residents by removing deteriorating galvanized pipes that contain lead deposits and pose health hazards. Many of the targeted areas are located in state-designated Environmental Justice communities, where residents face higher poverty rates or represent minority populations. The project also helps Erie Water Works comply with new federal EPA regulations requiring most U.S. cities to replace lead water pipes within 10 years, while reducing water loss from aging, leaking infrastructure that serves over 63,000 customers across Erie and surrounding townships.

Frequently asked questions
-
With Erie’s water measuring 8.53 grains per gallon, a water softener can help restore balance to your daily routine. Hard water may contribute to dry, dull hair and can make soaps less effective. A softener helps reduce mineral buildup, giving you softer, healthier-looking hair and more effective cleansing every time you wash.
-
Unfiltered water can contain chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants that impact taste, odor, and quality. A water filtration system helps remove these unwanted elements, so every sip, rinse, and wash is cleaner, fresher, and better for your home and health.
-
A water softener targets minerals in hard water with an ion exchange process. A water filter focuses on removing contaminants and bacteria, typically by forcing water through some form of barrier to separate the clean water from the unwanted substances.
-
Does your water taste or smell bad? Are you experiencing hard water stains on your appliances, or scale buildup on your shower head? While there are many signs that you may need a water filter, the best way to determine whether you need water treatment is to schedule a free water test from our local office in Erie.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a drinking water purification process that helps remove unwanted substances from tap water by pushing water through a special barrier called a semipermeable membrane. This barrier blocks heavy metals (like lead), arsenic, PFAS, chlorine, and chemicals, so only purified water is passed through. The result is water with 99.9% of all contaminants, sediments, and particles removed, making crisper, cleaner, and safer drinking water.
