Water in Raleigh is Moderately Hard

Raleigh

According to our proprietary data, the average total water hardness in Raleigh is 3.7 grains per gallon (gpg), which falls in the moderately hard range. This means there’s a fair amount of calcium and magnesium in the water here — two minerals that can build up over time and leave behind residue in your pipes, appliances, and fixtures. This buildup can make things less efficient and even shorten the life of your home’s systems if left unchecked.

Water sources

According to a 2024 Environmental Working Group analysis, drinking water for at least 2.5 million North Carolina residents is contaminated with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) at levels exceeding new federal standards. These “forever chemicals” are toxic fluorinated compounds that don’t break down in the environment and accumulate in the human body over time. In North Carolina, 47 community drinking water systems had PFAS detections above the EPA’s maximum contaminant levels, with some areas showing contamination levels that are double or triple the federal limits.

Several major water utilities serving Raleigh-area communities are affected by this contamination. The Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority, serving over 367,000 people, detected PFOA at 5 parts per trillion and PFOS at 9 parts per trillion – both above the EPA’s 4 ppt limit. The City of Durham’s water system, serving over 321,000 residents, also showed PFOS levels of 5 ppt above federal standards. These utilities are now required to install treatment systems like reverse osmosis or granular-activated carbon filtration to remove PFAS from drinking water within five years.

PFAS exposure has been linked to serious health issues including impaired immune system response, liver and kidney damage, hormone disruption, developmental problems, and several types of cancer. North Carolina has been particularly affected due to decades of industrial discharge from facilities like the former DuPont Fayetteville Works plant, which released PFAS into the Cape Fear River starting in 1980. For homeowners concerned about PFAS contamination, installing in-home water treatment systems with reverse osmosis or multi-stage carbon filtration can effectively reduce these chemicals in drinking water while utilities work to comply with the new federal standards.

See the difference cleaner water makes for customers in Raleigh

I’ve had my whole house filtration system for about a year now. I have to say I’m as happy now as I was day one. From day one the salesman Kevin, who made it as painless as possible, to the installation guy (sorry I forgot his name) it went so smoothly. The one service I needed once, was handled great. I had three quotes before i chose them. i will say there was a cheaper company but the product didn’t match up. Waited a year to write this just to be sure. Very happy customer here and would recommend, hands down. Hope you get the same saleman as I did!!!!

Allyson FredetteVerified Customer

Very satisfied customer! From the day I contacted Leaf Home Water Solutions until the last day once the system had been installed and all test were completed it was a smooth transaction. The water filtration system was for a home I was selling and I had been informed I needed specific water test from the buyers lender in order to close the sell of my home on time. I called and spoke with the install manager Ethan Smith who was more than happy to assist with the test. Ethan went out of his way to accommodate me even making an additional trip on the weekend to complete the test required. As a small business owner myself, Ethan’s professionalism, integrity and character are qualities I admire and were unmatched.
