Water in Charlotte is Slightly Hard
According to our proprietary data, the average total water hardness in Charlotte is 3.4 grains per gallon (gpg), which falls in the moderately hard range. This means your water contains higher levels of calcium and magnesium minerals. Over time, these minerals create buildup in your pipes, water heater, and appliances. This buildup reduces efficiency and can damage your home’s plumbing systems if not addressed with proper water treatment solutions.

Charlotte, NC water sources
According to a recent Environmental Working Group (EWG) analysis, drinking water for at least 2.5 million North Carolinians is contaminated with toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS at levels exceeding new federal standards. The study found that 47 community drinking water systems across the state had PFAS detections above the EPA’s maximum contaminant levels, with some areas showing contamination levels that are double or triple the new federal limits.
PFAS are highly toxic fluorinated chemicals that don’t break down in the environment and accumulate in the human body over time. Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to serious health issues including impaired immune system response, liver and kidney damage, hormone disruption, developmental problems, and several types of cancer. Major North Carolina water utilities, including those serving Durham, Greensboro, and Fayetteville, have detected PFAS levels above EPA standards and are implementing treatment solutions such as reverse osmosis systems and granular-activated carbon filtration to address the contamination.
The contamination stems from various sources including industrial facilities, military bases, and manufacturing operations throughout the state. North Carolina has been identified as an epicenter of PFAS contamination in the United States, with at least 66 electroplating facilities and 50 chemical manufacturers that could be sources of these chemicals. Water utilities now have up to five years to comply with the new EPA standards, which may require changing water sources or installing advanced filtration systems to provide safe drinking water to residents.
