Water in St. Louis is Very Hard

St. Louis

According to our proprietary data, the average total water hardness in St. Louis is 12.8 grains per gallon (gpg), which falls in the very hard range. This means there’s a lot of calcium and magnesium in the water here — two minerals that can build up over time and leave behind residue in your pipes, appliances, and fixtures. This buildup can make things less efficient and even shorten the life of your home’s systems if left unchecked.

St. Louis, MO water sources

Water sources

The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District recently completed Missouri’s longest tunnel project, the Lower Meramec Tunnel, which stretches nearly 7 miles underground at depths ranging from 78 to 286 feet. This $174 million infrastructure project was designed to intercept wastewater flows and improve water quality within the Meramec River basin in St. Louis County. The tunnel boring machine, nicknamed ‘Miss Briella,’ successfully completed its underground journey in October 2024, and the system is scheduled to begin operations in 2025.

This major sewer infrastructure improvement is part of MSD’s Project Clear, a 23-year, $4.5 billion capital improvement program required under a consent decree with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The tunnel will allow MSD to remove its interim Fenton Wastewater Treatment Facility from operation and better manage wastewater for over 1.3 million residents served by the fourth largest wastewater collection system in the United States. The project demonstrates the ongoing challenges St. Louis area homeowners face with aging water infrastructure and the significant investments required to maintain water quality and regulatory compliance in the region.

Frequently asked questions

  • With St. Louis water measuring 12.85 grains per gallon, a water softener can help restore balance to your hair and skin. Hard water may reduce soap effectiveness and can contribute to hair dryness. Our water experts at Leaf Home help provide softer, healthier-looking results every time you wash.

  • There are many benefits to filtering your water. It can help safeguard your health, prolong the life of your plumbing and appliances, enhance clothing longevity, and eliminate the need for single-use plastic water bottles.

  • Water filters and water softeners both help improve water quality by removing certain unwanted materials. Water filters focus on contaminants and chemicals, and often work by forcing water through some kind of barrier to trap debris and allow only cleaner, clearer water to pass through. Water softeners, on the other hand, work more like a magnet, pulling away minerals and impurities that cause hard water.

  • If your water has a strange taste, odor, or discoloration, it might be time to filter it. Other signs include cloudy water, buildup on faucets, or reports of contaminants in your local water supply. The best way to determine whether you need water treatment is to schedule a free water test from our local office in St. Louis.

  • Reverse osmosis (RO) is a drinking water purification process that helps remove unwanted substances from tap water by pushing water through a special barrier called a semipermeable membrane. This barrier blocks heavy metals (like lead), arsenic, PFAS, chlorine, and chemicals, so only purified water is passed through. The result is water with 99.9% of all contaminants, sediments, and particles removed, making crisper, cleaner, and safer drinking water.
