Water in Detroit is Very Hard

Detroit
0 gpg 1 gpg 3.5 gpg 7 gpg 10+ gpg

According to our proprietary data, the average total water hardness in Detroit is 13.5 grains per gallon (gpg), which falls in the very hard range. This means there’s a lot of calcium and magnesium in the water here — two minerals that can build up over time and leave behind residue in your pipes, appliances, and fixtures. This buildup can make things less efficient and even shorten the life of your home’s systems if left unchecked.

Detroit, MI water sources

Water sources

A recent news story from MLive highlights ongoing water contamination challenges in southeastern Michigan that demonstrate the critical importance of water treatment solutions for homeowners. The story details how PFAS chemicals, known as “forever chemicals,” are being discharged from a Wixom wastewater treatment plant into Norton Creek, which flows into the Huron River and affects downstream communities including Ann Arbor. This contamination originates from Tribar Technologies, a chrome-plating facility that uses PFAS in its manufacturing process.

The contamination issue has forced Ann Arbor to spend an additional $150,000 annually on water treatment to remove PFAS from drinking water supplies. Despite carbon filtration systems, the city’s treated water still contains four types of PFAS compounds totaling 17.9 parts per trillion as of August 2022. This situation illustrates how industrial pollution can travel through waterways and impact residential water quality miles downstream, making effective home water treatment systems essential for protecting families from contaminants that municipal treatment may not completely eliminate.

See the difference cleaner water makes for customers in Detroit

Okay, this is going to be long, but worth the read.. I was extremely skeptical about using this company because yes, they called me about 30 times and it makes it seem like it’s definitely a scam. I assure you it definitely is not! About a month ago, we had lost a whole tank of freshwater fish, and my most beautiful fancy tailed Oranda and angel fish died out of the blue as well in another tank. So, I tested our water at home and it said it was high in nitrates, pH, and we had very hard water. Despite the treatments that I was giving both of the tanks afterwards, it just seemed like there was issue with our water more so than what I thought. When the rep came to our house, I was still cautious and skeptical until he tested the water and came up with the exact same results. I did not tell him what had happened previous to him testing our water. The rep was very professional, courteous, and respectful. We had decided that we would go ahead with the purchase, but something you should know is that the price the sales rep quotes you is for all up front payment. If you finance this purchase, your payment per month will be double as well as your total amount. So my advice would be to figure out a way to pay this off very quickly if you decide to finance. I was impressed with the installer as well. He was very respectful, kind, and mindful of our time and minimize any kind of damage that could have occurred. The install went great, no issues whatsoever. Now at this point, I had ran the water for a little bit and did notice that it was cloudy, a little chalky, and there was charcoal like particles in my sink. Now if you have experience with filters, you know that they have to be flushed so that the access dust can be expelled. So after a few hours and into the next day, our water was super clear, and tasted way better than what it ever had. At this point I knew I had made the right decision. This system also adds value to your home if you ever decide to move. The maintenance on it is very minimal, and easy to bypass or turn off and on at your discretion. I immediately changed all of my aquarium tanks and I am incredibly impressed. I would 100% recommend using this company to filter your water. The water actually feels softer and seems to be as pure as they say it is.

Frequently asked questions

  • Detroit’s water averages 13.46 grains per gallon, which falls in the very hard category. A water softener can help reduce these excess minerals that may dry out your hair and scalp, potentially leading to irritation. Hard water can make soaps less effective, so a softener helps restore balance for softer, healthier-looking hair.

  • There are many benefits to filtering your water. It can help safeguard your health, prolong the life of your plumbing and appliances, enhance clothing longevity, and eliminate the need for single-use plastic water bottles.

  • Water filters and water softeners both help improve water quality by removing certain unwanted materials. Water filters focus on contaminants and chemicals, and often work by forcing water through some kind of barrier to trap debris and allow only cleaner, clearer water to pass through. Water softeners, on the other hand, work more like a magnet, pulling away minerals and impurities that cause hard water.

  • If your water has a strange taste, odor, or discoloration, it might be time to filter it. Other signs include cloudy water, buildup on faucets, or reports of contaminants in your local water supply. The best way to determine whether you need water treatment is to schedule a free water test from our local office in Detroit.

  • Reverse osmosis (RO) is a drinking water purification process that helps remove unwanted substances from tap water by pushing water through a special barrier called a semipermeable membrane. This barrier blocks heavy metals (like lead), arsenic, PFAS, chlorine, and chemicals, so only purified water is passed through. The result is water with 99.9% of all contaminants, sediments, and particles removed, making crisper, cleaner, and safer drinking water.
