Water in Phoenix is Very Hard

Phoenix

According to our proprietary data, the average total water hardness in Phoenix is 12.3 grains per gallon (gpg), which falls in the very hard range. This means there’s a lot of calcium and magnesium in the water here — two minerals that can build up over time and leave behind residue in your pipes, appliances, and fixtures. This buildup can make things less efficient and even shorten the life of your home’s systems if left unchecked.

Phoenix, AZ Water Sources

Water Sources

Phoenix’s Water Department recently notified residents about potential lead exposure in water pipes following new EPA requirements. The city investigated 98% of its water lines and found no lead pipes, but some galvanized steel pipes may have absorbed lead over time, and others were designated as having unknown materials. This investigation was mandated by the EPA’s revised Lead and Copper Rule from 2021, which requires water providers nationwide to identify and replace problematic pipes.

While city officials emphasize that actual lead exposure risk is extremely low, the health effects of lead in drinking water can be serious, including decreased IQ in children and increased risks of heart disease and kidney problems in adults. Phoenix plans to replace galvanized pipes starting in early 2025 at no cost to residents, though the process will take multiple years to complete. Other Valley cities like Mesa, Scottsdale, and Glendale are also conducting similar investigations and will notify affected residents. The city recommends using certified lead-removal filters, cleaning aerators regularly, and using cold water for drinking and cooking as precautionary measures while pipe replacements are underway.

5 Stars Leaf Home Water Solutions has completely transformed our water quality and, in turn, our lives! Before installing their system, we had no idea how harmful our water was—not just for drinking, but also for our skin and hair. Since the installation, we’ve noticed significant improvements in our health, and even simple things like tea and coffee taste so much better. Their team was punctual, transparent, and made it affordable for us to enjoy clean, healthy water. Showers no longer leave us itchy or smelling of chlorine and chemicals. Knowing our water is free of contaminants has been a game-changer. The filters are easy to change and last for months. If you’re considering a water system, don’t hesitate—this is life-changing, and Leaf Home Water Solutions is the company to trust!

Shawn Goodner came to our home One of the other benefits that we have I am really glad that we have this system. immediately is that there is no more water spotting on our glasses in the dishwasher., tested the water and based on those tests recommended a system. He was professional and exerted. No pressure whatsoever. Just explained what we had and what we needed to have good drinking water. One of my primary concerns was scaling. With the new system, water left to evaporate on a countertop leaves small grains that can easily be wiped away. Prior to that it would leave residue that had to be scrubbed off. Another improvement that we noted right away is that water spotting on glasses in the dishwasher has disappeared.

Frequently asked questions

  • Phoenix water measures 12.34 grains per gallon, making it very hard. This mineral-rich water reduces soap effectiveness and can dry out your hair and skin. A water softener removes these excess minerals, helping restore your hair’s natural softness and improving your daily washing experience with better lather and cleaner rinses.

  • Unfiltered water can contain chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants that impact taste, odor, and quality. A water filtration system helps remove these unwanted elements, so every sip, rinse, and wash is cleaner, fresher, and better for your home and health.

  • A water softener targets minerals in hard water with an ion exchange process. A water filter focuses on removing contaminants and bacteria, typically by forcing water through some form of barrier to separate the clean water from the unwanted substances.

  • Several signs can indicate the benefit of a water filter, including water that tastes weird or has a bad odor. In addition, scale buildup and shower heads getting clogged easily can indicate the need for a filter. The best way to determine whether you need water treatment is to schedule a free water test from our local office in Phoenix.

  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a water filtration process that helps remove unwanted contaminants, such as arsenic, PFAS, chlorine, and copper, from tap water, resulting in crisper, cleaner, and safer drinking water.
